UNION OF CATHOLIC MOTHERS (UCM) "The Mothers" have met in St. Vincent's Parish since the early 1900s. Currently members meet in the hall each Wednesday morning after mass. Mass is at 9.30am. The meetings involve: prayer; organising fundraising and social events; discussions; organising visits to the sick and housebound parishioners; etc. St. Vincent's Foundation members attend Diocesan meetings, study days, retreats and the National UCM Annual pilgrimage to Walsingham. They were first known as the Guild of St. Anne and met in the Parish hall on Monday afternoons before collecting their children from school. When the Chapel of Ease opened on School Road, Crookes, Sr. Agnes, a Daughter of Charity suggested that mothers from Crookes and Walkley (St Joseph's) should join the National organisation of the Union of Catholic Mothers. This was in 1958 and the group has met on a regular basis ever since.
The number of members has dropped since those early days but a small number still meet every fortnight on Wednesday mornings at 10am after the 9.30am mass.
